Solomon Family Solutions offers sliding scale – income based therapeutic and mental health services specializing in art therapy under the supervision of Registered Art Therapist J. Blythe Mayfield.

Solomon Family Solutions serves children (as young as 3 years old), teens, adults, and seniors.  For children under the age of 3 years, a parent or guardian may be required to accompany the minor during the session.

Solomon Family Solutions strongly advocates for the use of art therapy over other forms of mental health care and therapy because of its powerful and effective way of transcending verbal communication and expression.  Art therapy is ideal for young children, individuals with developmental delays, and/or for those suffering from trauma.

What is art therapy?blythe

Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages.  Artistic self expression facilitates the resolution of conflicts, development of interpersonal skills, management of problem behaviors, reduction of stress, increase of self-esteem and self-awareness, and achievement of insight. –American Art Therapy Association

*Art therapy approaches adapt to serve the unique needs of individuals, couples, families, and groups of all ages.

*The primary focus is on the process of making art (rather than aesthetic qualities) and therefore does not require any particular skill or talent to participate.

*Art therapy utilizes artistic media as a vehicle for exploring feelings, thoughts, and perceptions of  the world around us.

*Making an image, whether a drawing, painting, or a sculpture, is an experience of visual thinking that provides a tactile source of personal information, thus helping individuals convey messages without having to rely on words alone.

*The artwork bridges the gap between the artist and art therapist, providing a shared focus.  The art therapist does not solely interpret the meaning of art produced by the artist. Rather, the art therapist’s role is to facilitate the artist in finding personal significance and validation in his/her own work.
